#11 John Curtis takes down #10 Edna Karr

Tensions were high when John Curtis traveled to face one of their biggest rivals, Edna Karr High School.  Though the two Louisiana schools are only a short half hour drive away from each other, both consistently rank in the nation’s top football programs.  Currently, DigitalSports puts Karr at 10th in their National Football Rankings with Curtis just behind at 11th.

Curtis started the game off on fire.  The Patriots jumped out to a huge 23-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.  Most of their offensive power was generated by senior running back George Moreira, finishing the game with 19 carries for 161 yards and three touchdowns.

Karr finally made it to the endzone in the beginning of the second quarter, but Curtis responded with a touchdown to extend their lead to 30-6.  Then, the Cougars found their rhythm, midway through the second, scoring 14 points before the end of the quarter to bring it to 30-20 at halftime.

That was just the start of Karr’s scoring spree.  The Cougars scored a touchdown in the third, shutting out Curtis during that quarter, and another to start the fourth.  After missing the extra point, Karr led Curtis 33-30 in the fourth quarter, a 27 point swing.

Even though they lost all of their momentum, the Patriots did not crumble.  Two possessions later, George Moreira score his third touchdown of the game with only 30 seconds left.  Karr was left without enough time to score, losing the game 38-33.

Curtis’ next match is against St. Augustine, another Louisiana powerhouse.  St. Augustine lost to Karr earlier in the season and will be working hard to prove take down Curtis, their other state rivals.

The Patriots will travel to St. Augustine on Friday, October 4.  The opening kickoff is at 7:00p.

Key Player:

George Moreira- 19 carries, 161 yards, 3 TD
